First Impressions

Remember that first impressions last!

Dress
Like it or not, your appearance can influence the interviewer's assessment of your suitability for the job: studies have shown that about 55% of the interviewer's first impression will be decided by your appearance, 38% by the way you speak and a mere 7% by the words you use.
  • Formal suit is most acceptable in a sober colour. Do not be afraid to let your character come through without being too outrageous!
  • Avoid wearing uncomfortable clothes or shoes, which may affect the way you sit or carry yourself.
  • Carry any required documents such as certificates or references in just one bag or briefcase, otherwise you may appear cluttered and disorganised.
  • Remove all outdoor clothing before you go into the interview room, and make a real entrance!
Arriving
Leave for your interview in plenty of time, and don't take any chances by relying too heavily on public transport or a traffic-free journey. By arriving at least 15 minutes early, you will have a chance to relax, gather your thoughts and mentally prepare for your interview. Also remember to be pleasant to receptionists and other staff you meet: after all, they could be your new colleagues!

Handshake
A positive handshake establishes goodwill, and shows confidence and an interest in the job. If you are relaxed and comfortable, your hands should be warm and dry. A nervous candidate's hands may be cold and sweaty.
